Having secured a full photographers pass for this meeting and it being my first ever trip to the mighty Spa-Francorchamps circuit I thought I'd keep a more detailed account of my weekend than usual
I travelled armed to the teeth with digital and 35mm to take full advantage of what was a wonderful experience
I tried capture the atmosphere of the whole weekend, rather than just images of cars on track, and reveal some of the faces behind the helmets (unless the appropriate bribes are forthcoming to prevent this of course *lol*) but was once again beguiled by the machinery.
Friday: Left home 3:15am arrived Dover 6am, looked grim out to see. Ferry not leaving till 8:15 so caught some zzzz's. When woke at 7:15am bright blue skies. On board, breakfast, obligatory White Cliffs shot taken, play guess who's going to Spa as there seemed to be quite a few classics on board (turns out they were off to the 'Ring for track days). Arrived Dunkerque 11:30. Route to Spa from Peter Mallett was excellent and, despite some torrential rain, I arrived at the circuit at 2:30pm
I'm here and it all seems so unreal. Historic GT practice is in full flow so I wander up to the Bus Stop to catch the action. It seems a lot smaller than I imagined it to be from the TV. Wandered down to the pits and watched from the top of there for a while. Eau Rouge does look impressive. It isn't however until I'm standing on the inside of La Source that it really hits me.
I had to share this with somebody who would understand my sentiment so I call my dad back in the UK and yell down the phone...HOLY SHIT I'M AT F******* SPA!!! 'nuff said
